My girl with a bird is finished at last! And, I couldn't be happier with the way she turned out. In the world of Barnum's Winter, I imagine this shy and gentle lady sneaking away from the crowded parlor of her parents' estate to seek the more melodious company of the aviary, singing quietly in a silver toned warble with her feathered companions. She's a timid thing though, so if you'd like to hear her, you must be sneaky and hide yourself behind a fountain or bush to listen secretly.

I absolutely love that color background! Plus the painting is amazing. If you don't mind me asking, what did you mix with the cerulean, I assume from your interview, to get that?
Kate, if you mix cerulean, red (cadmium med.), and yellow (cadmium med.) in pretty equal portions, you get a nice brown -- mix a bit of this in with more of the blue for the shadowy bit (you might have to cut back on the yellow if it's looking too green). Mix less of it in with a touch of white for the lighter bits. All of it was applied in about 6 or 8 really thin, watery layers. The lightest parts also have the thinnest application of paint, so you can still see some brightness from the canvas underneath. I think I did the last layer in pure cerulean just to get it a bit more vivid.
